Hot Tire Pickup: The Garage Floor Failure Explained

If a garage floor is peeling specifically where the tires sit, this is almost certainly why.

Hot tire pickup is the term for a coating lifting off the floor where a vehicle's tires sit, and it's the single most common failure mode for a garage floor coating that wasn't properly bonded to begin with.

Where the heat comes from

A tire that's been driven any real distance, especially on a hot day, retains heat when the car is parked. That heat transfers into the coating directly under the tire, softening it slightly right at the contact points.

Why the rubber lifts the coating

A softened coating has some tack to it, and rubber grips tack well. When the car moves — even just pulling forward or backing out — the tire can grab the softened coating and peel a section of it up, especially at the leading or trailing edge of where the tire sat.

Why this specifically exposes weak bonding

A coating that's properly bonded to a mechanically ground surface has enough adhesion to resist this even when softened by heat. A coating sitting on an acid-etched or otherwise under-prepped surface has much less to hold it down, and hot tire pickup is often the first real stress test that surface ever faces.

Why it shows up at the tire tracks specifically

The rest of the floor sees foot traffic and the occasional dropped tool, not sustained heat and shear force in the same spot. The tire tracks are where the coating's bond actually gets tested, which is why failures cluster there rather than spreading evenly.

What prevents it

Proper mechanical prep so the coating bonds fully, and a system suited to vehicle traffic rather than a light-duty decorative coating, are what keep hot tire pickup from being a problem in the first place.
